15th February 2021Rabbits are small mammals in the Leporidae family.
There are over 305 breeds of domestic (pet) rabbits alone!
When rabbits are born, they are hairless and blind, so needs lots of care to make them grow up strong.
Rabbits are known for their lovely soft fur, even wild rabbits.
Rabbits use their large ears to listen out for predators. Animals like owls, eagles, and foxes will eat rabbits if they catch them.
The rabbits are able to hop because of their long back feet and strong muscles. These long feet mean that rabbits can move pretty fast, jackrabbits can move up to 45 miles an hour!
Rabbits also use their ears to control their body temperature. They have blood vessels in their ears they can use to cool down, or they can keep the heat in by pumping less blood to them or keeping them flat against their body.
Rabbits like to live in groups and dig burrows in all sorts of places. Meadows, forests, fields, and even deserts can be home to rabbits.
Rabbits mostly come out when it is dark but sometimes do during, especially early or at sunset. They only sleep for around 8 hours a day and can do this with their eyes open.
