28th February 2024Embracing Tradition: Exploring Dia de los Muertos with JRNY Magazine
6th March 2024Embarking on a journey to Scotland in 2022, I found myself in the midst of a dream job as an activity instructor, nestled within the expanse of Perthshire’s “Big Tree Country.” Unbeknownst to me, this stunning locale would transform into my home for an unforgettable eight months. The adventure began with a drive marked by the anticipation of storms, my car brimming with belongings.
As I drew closer, so did the anticipation about my new home. The landscape unfolded like a scene from a fairy tale, with Dalguise village greeting me with its towering trees and majestic mountains, all lightly dusted with snow. It was here, amidst this natural splendour, that I discovered my new home was once the summer retreat of Beatrix Potter, an enchanting detail.
The transition was swift, from heartfelt farewells to my parents to diving straight into training, all while adapting to the brisk Scottish air. The companionships I formed with fellow instructors, united by the shared thrill of new experiences, laid the foundation for bonds that would deepen with each passing season.
Over these months, my skills and spirit were tested and honed through a range of activities – from abseiling and zip wiring to orienteering and archery. The job was a gateway to endless adventures, each day bringing a new challenge and a deeper connection to the natural world around me.
As the seasons changed, so did the landscape and our experiences. Spring brought its light and cold touches in equal measure, paving the way for a vibrant summer filled with t-shirt weather, natural glows, and the lively bustle of six-day workweeks. Our leisure time was a celebration of the outdoors, from wild water swimming at Rumbling Bridge to indulging in the simple pleasures of chips and ice cream in the local tourist village of Dunkeld.
The pinnacle of summer offered a brief respite, perfect for a wild camping adventure on the Isle of Skye. Despite an initial battle with the elements, our spirits remained unbroken, leading us from the awe-inspiring mountains of Glencoe to the mystical fairy pools, with our camping dog Reuben by our side.
One of my favourite memories from this strip was setting up our camp with determination (and perhaps a touch of naivety), our spirits undampened by the weather’s refusal to cooperate. Yet, as the reality of our soggy surroundings settled in, we made the executive decision that true campers adapt. And adapt we did, driving to the local pub in search of shelter, warmth, and, of course, a hearty meal accompanied by the embrace of a good beer. The pub, with its cosy ambiance and the promise of dry seating, became our haven from the storm.
As we sat there, surrounded by the laughter of locals and the clinking of glasses, a realization dawned on us. Perhaps wild camping, with its unpredictability and challenges, was not quite our calling. Safe to say we booked a campsite for the next night.
In the spirit of adventure, we made our way to our spontaneous campsite not knowing what to expect. Our tents nestled gently on a pristine beach, with the majestic silhouette of mountains standing guard behind us.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a glow over the sand, we gathered around a crackling fire. The simplicity of making cheese sandwiches over the flames brought a sense of rustic charm to our evening. Each bite, though unexpectedly crunchy with sand from the coastal wind.
Our adventure didn’t stop at culinary experiments gone wrong. We set off to explore the famed fairy pools, a place as magical as its name suggests. The pools did not disappoint, offering us more than we could have hoped for—a blend of natural beauty and a sense of serenity.
As the trip ended and we headed home quite quickly, So did Summer. As autumn painted our surroundings with its hues, we spent the cosy evenings with movie nights and lots of warm, comforting cups of tea. This month, the farewells began, marking the end of an era. The departure of friends and the culmination of this chapter were bittersweet, yet the memories forged and the bonds created were indelible.
Reflecting on my time in Scotland, it was more than just an adventure; it was a journey of growth, friendship, and discovery. From the challenges faced to the beauty embraced, this experience has etched a permanent place in my heart, reminding me of the strength found in new beginnings and the lasting impact of the moments shared.
Scotland, with its majestic landscapes and the warmth of its people, will forever be a cherished chapter in my life’s story, a testament to the beauty of embracing the unknown and the treasures that await when we dare to venture beyond our comfort zones.
