24th April 2024Freycinet National Park, Australia- Tasmania
For my 21st birthday, an unexpected gift from my sister transformed into an unforgettable journey from Melbourne to Tasmania. Over four days, we embarked on an east coast road trip, making Coles Bay our initial stop and gateway to the enchanting Freycinet National Park. This protected area, a meld of rugged mountains and pristine white sand beaches, served as the backdrop to our adventure.
The highlight was our trek to Wineglass Bay beach, a secluded paradise accessible only after a three-hour round hike, ensuring its tranquillity and untouched beauty. This exclusivity contributes to its ranking among the world’s top ten beaches. The journey to the beach was as remarkable as the destination itself, with breath-taking vistas along the way. Midway, a lookout offered a panoramic view of the bay’s distinctive wineglass shape, revealing the origin of its name.
Post-hike, the serene setting of bright white sands and crystal-clear waters offered a moment of pure bliss as we enjoyed our lunch, taking in the cleanest air. The journey back was memorable, not least for the souvenir I collected – a testament to the day’s exertion – in the form of a minor hiking injury. Yet, it stood as a proud reminder of the effort invested to witness such beauty.
Beyond Wineglass Bay, there’s plenty more to uncover at Freycinet. The diversity in the coastal landscape is dramatic, with rocky coves and surging surf around one corner, and sheltered bays and sandy beaches around the next. As you explore the park, the Hazards – a spectacular granite mountain range that rises dramatically from the sheltered turquoise bays – provides a breath-taking backdrop that is never far from view.
This national park was just one day of our awe-inspiring Tasmania trip and this whole experience was more than just a series of picturesque landscapes; it was a reunion and a shared exploration with my sister, whom I hadn’t spent significant time with since I was 16. This journey rekindled our bond through a series of present moments and rediscoveries. Tasmania, with its beautiful scenery, rich history, and unparalleled sense of freedom, left an indelible mark on my heart, filled with memories that transcend the mere beauty of its locations.
