Embrace Self-Discovery and Mindful Living with Breathe Magazine
7th February 20246 Magazines to Embrace the Month of Love, Regardless of Your Relationship Status
14th February 2024Hello, I’m Andrea from Unique Magazines, and I’d love to share a piece of my heart with you: Sunderland’s beautiful coastline. Though my current home is in Newcastle, my roots are deeply embedded in the sands and seas of Sunderland, the city where I was born and raised.
Childhood Memories Revisited
My earliest and most cherished memories are of endless summers spent on the beach with my family, and tranquil walks stretching from Roker, through Seaburn, to Whitburn. Each time I return, the coastline greets me with a different face. The stark contrast between the ferocious waves crashing against the rocks in winter and the serene, mirror-like sea in summer never fails to amaze me. It’s a reminder of the ever-changing beauty of nature that Sunderland so gracefully embodies.
The Transformation of the Coastline
Growing up, I witnessed the transformation of the Sunderland coast. Where once stood abandoned shelters and empty buildings, now lies a lively promenade of quirky bars, cafés, and restaurants. This transformation has breathed new life into the area, earning it the nickname “Roker Riviera”. The aroma of fish and chips in the air is a constant temptation, and it’s thrilling to see how these changes have rejuvenated the coast, making it a vibrant place for both locals and visitors.
My Adventure Beneath the Pier
A dream of mine was to explore beneath the Roker Pier and inside its iconic lighthouse. Last year, this dream became a reality. Booking a tour through the Roker Pier website, I found myself embarking on a fascinating journey into the past. Guided by knowledgeable volunteers, our small group ventured through the dark, damp tunnel beneath the sea, uncovering stories and features that brought the history of the place to life. Climbing up the lighthouse, I was enveloped by the solitude and the rhythmic crashing of waves – it was as if I could imagine the life of a lighthouse keeper. The view from the top, revealing the surprising clarity and blue of the North Sea, was stunning, though I wish the dolphins had decided to show up.
Sunderland: My Sanctuary
Despite my biases, I believe Sunderland, with its rich history and natural beauty, offers a piece of sanctuary for everyone. From water sports to parks, and hosting events like airshows and the World Triathlon, there’s an abundance of activities to rejuvenate your spirit. And if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a dolphin.
Sunderland’s coastline is more than just a destination to me; it’s a part of who I am. It’s my go-to place for escapism, reflection, and reconnecting with my roots. Whether you’re visiting for a few hours or planning a longer stay, I’m confident that Sunderland will capture your heart just as it has mine.
