14th February 2023The importance of reading for children
23rd February 2023I have been buying Burda magazines since the mid 1980’s and sewn many garments from them. Although, I did have quite a long break from sewing, as work got in the way, so I didn’t buy any magazines during those years. Also, stupidly, at that time I threw all my old magazines away thinking I wouldn’t need them again. I really wished I hadn’t.
I now have amassed a collection since 2014, although, I confess, I haven’t made a garment from each and every one, but I do like to look at them.
I don’t buy every magazine before I’ve checked out a YouTube channel called ‘Saturday Night Stitch on which, each month, the presenter goes through the following month’s magazine and line drawings. If there’s more than one style I like, then I buy it.
Not everyone likes Burda patterns because the seam allowance isn’t on them, but I find them easier if you have to adjust the fitting.
For beginners, the instructions are limited, therefore, I would suggest starting with Burda Easy magazine. However, Burda have now produced some online tutorials, although I haven’t looked at any yet.
Recent Make
This is a jacket I’ve just finished for my Daughter-in-Law. It’s Burda 108A from the December 2015 issue.
I had had a 2M length of boucle fabric in my fabric stash for some time, which I wasn’t sure what to make with it. The suggested fabric for this style was boucle and I like to use similar fabrics to the ones shown so it’s likely you’ll get a successful result.
However, in all the years I’ve been sewing I’ve haven’t used boucle and it was, shall I say, challenging. Once the pattern had been cut, any handling on the raw edges resulted in fraying. To minimise this, I overlocked all the raw edges. Also, as the stitching on the seams seemed to ‘disappear’ into the fibres, it proved difficult to unpick, not impossible though. You’re very lucky if you don’t need to unpick as I’m sure most sewers do at some point.
My Experience With Unique Magazines
I found Unique Magazines, not sure how I came across the company, but I’m so glad I did. Their service is excellent and a couple of times that I’ve rung with a query it’s been answered/sorted by efficient, knowledgeable, friendly staff.
