23rd April 2024Nestled in the heart of Newcastle, Barluga graces the vibrant Grey Street, leading down from the iconic Grey’s Monument to Dean Street and the Quayside. This historic street was once lined with banks and insurance buildings, which have since been transformed into a lively mix of bars, restaurants, cafés, and independent shops. Impressively, 40% of the buildings in this area are listed for their historical or architectural significance. Historically, the area served as an open sewer in medieval times until the burn was culverted. Intriguingly, many of the toilet facilities are located underground or in the basements of these buildings, often connected by a small warren of interlinking passageways and stairways.
Conceived by Richard Grainger and designed in conjunction with John Dobson’s ambitious plans for a new town center in the 1830s, Grey Street is a testament to visionary urban planning. The Theatre Royal, which opened its doors in 1837, is acclaimed as one of the finest theatres in the country.
Barluga occupies a part of what was once the Bank of England. Having traded on Grey Street for the last 25 years, it offers a unique and sophisticated setting characterised by leather chairs, luxurious drapes, and huge lamp shades that create an opulent, glamorous atmosphere. It also features an all-year-round sun terrace, complete with comfortable seating, heated lamps, and large parasols.
The menu at Barluga is crafted using the finest locally sourced seasonal produce, with inspiration drawn from global cuisines. We have had the pleasure of visiting on multiple occasions, including during the Christmas festivities.
During our recent visit, we started with Nachos, which were crispy, cheesy, and moreish, followed by a Haggis & black pudding Scotch egg accompanied by HP sauce. For our main courses, we chose the Ale-battered haddock served with thick-cut chips, mushy peas, and tartare sauce, as well as the Barluga beef burger with thick-cut chips. Each dish was beautifully cooked and full of flavour.
Whether it’s for brunch, Sunday lunch, drinks with friends, or a special meal, Barluga is the perfect venue. It offers delicious food and excellent service in one of Newcastle’s most famous streets.
