30th May 2022Calling all biscuit lovers! Today is the 29th of May which means it is National Biscuit Day here in the UK. We all know that us Brits love a cup of tea and a biscuit (or a few), it’s a staple part of our diet. Unlike previous years, this year may be the biggest due to the upcoming celebration of the Queens Jubilee.
Biscuits come in all shapes, sizes, textures, and tastes. Though, they are no modern invention, biscuits date back to the Neolithic era or The New Stone Age. However, they will not have looked or tasted like our modern-day biscuits. The Romans had a form of biscuit, what we’d now call rusk which is basically bread which was baked until crisp and was useful for energy and rationed easily.
In the 17thcentury biscuits were changed forever, as sugar was then involved in the biscuit making industry. Not only did sugar change the game for the biscuit world, but so did the upgrading of cooking facilities!
By the 19th century biscuits of many kinds were everywhere, easy to access and easy to make from home. This then leads us to today, today we have such a variety of biscuits to choose from.
The UK’s top favourite biscuits are:
- Chocolate Digestive
- Chocolate Hobnob
- Jammie Dodger
- Custard Cremes
- Shortbread
Not only are biscuits extremely popular, but so are cakes, scones, and other pastries!
