13th March 2024Where Music Meets the Menu: Exploring our local Hard Rock Café.
20th March 2024Budapest had always been a dream destination for me, though I couldn’t pinpoint exactly why. The allure of the city called to me, despite my limited knowledge of its offerings. My fascination with Budapest became so well-known that my 19th birthday brought an incredible surprise: a trip to Budapest, announced through a globe-shaped personalized balloon. The excitement was overwhelming, and I immediately dove into planning the adventure.
Our journey to Budapest was seamless, and upon arrival, we were welcomed by a remarkably friendly taxi driver who was keen to chat. This initial encounter was a preview of the warm hospitality that defines Hungary. The locals’ energy and kindness are palpable, making visitors feel right at home.
Our first culinary experience was at a cosy Hungarian restaurant where my unfamiliarity with the currency led to quite an overpayment. The staff’s integrity shone through as they gently corrected our mistake, reflecting the genuine nature of the Hungarian people.
Below are five thing’s you must do when visiting the charming city of Budapest;
1. Experience Budapest by night with a evening cruise
Many are unaware that Budapest is actually two cities, Buda and Pest, united by the iconic Chain Bridge over the Danube River. On our first evening, we embarked on evening river cruise to witness this split and view the cities attractions, with the Parliament buildings quickly topping our list of must-see attractions for the following day.
There was something about seeing the city come alive at night on the cruise that was so magical to me, as evening has always been my favourite time of day. I like to think of it as the world going to sleep. I had a complimentary wine in one hand and my camera in the other, with the cold evening air hitting my face, it was an experience of pure presence and a real ‘wow’ moment of the gratitude I felt to experience this new adventure.
2. Shoes on the Danube Bank: A Poignant Memorial
The Shoes on the Danube Bank, a poignant memorial to the Hungarian Jews who were killed during 1944-1945, left an indelible mark on me. The sight of roses in tiny shoes and candles flickering in remembrance was deeply moving.
3. Széchenyi Thermal Baths: Budapest’s Iconic Spa Experience
A standout experience was visiting the Szechenyi Thermal Baths, particularly enchanting amidst the snow. Its historic significance and distinctive yellow façade make it a favourite among tourists.
4. Culinary delights at The For Sale Pub
The ‘For Sale Pub’ offered an unforgettable dining experience, its walls adorned with notes from global visitors and a floor covered in hay and monkey nuts, adding to its unique, rustic charm.
5. Ruin Bars: A Unique Nightlife Experience
Exploring Budapest’s ruin bars revealed an innovative nightlife scene, where artistic expression thrives amidst graffiti and live music, even allowing guests to lounge in bathtubs with a Bev, perfection!
For anyone considering a city break, Budapest is a must-visit destination. Its stunning architecture, welcoming locals, and vibrant culture make it a city that truly deserves to be loved.
