Exploring the Secluded Charm of Holy Island with Weird Walk Magazine
15th May 2024Embracing Change: The Launch of Our New Website
17th June 2024In 2009, a friend and I decided to embark on a holiday with a twist; we booked a Nile Cruise from Luxor to Aswan. Brimming with excitement, we boarded our flight to Luxor, but our adventure began sooner than anticipated due to a massive sandstorm. This unexpected event diverted us to Cairo. After a few hours, the storm subsided, and we continued our journey, arriving in Luxor and boarding our Nile cruiser in the early hours.
Despite getting only a few hours of sleep, we started our first itinerary stop the next morning. Although tired from the previous day’s travel, we left our cozy beds behind. Our boat was modest compared to others on the Nile, featuring hotel-like rooms, a restaurant for all our meals, and a bar/entertainment area. It even had a small pool and sunbathing area on deck. As we docked at various points of interest, we traversed through progressively more luxurious and palatial boats until we reached the shore.
Our fatigue vanished when we arrived at Karnak Temple, with the surreal sights leaving us in awe. Although we’ve all seen photos and TV programs, experiencing the temples, obelisks, sphinxes, hieroglyphics, and statues firsthand was truly mesmerising. Throughout the week, we visited Luxor Temple, Edfu Temple, Kom Ombo Temple, Philae Temple, Valley of the Kings, and Al Deir Al Bahri Temple. Our guide, an experienced Egyptologist, kept our spirits high with his amusing, easy-to-understand explanations of each site’s history, making our long, hot days incredibly engaging.
The ongoing preservation and archaeology were remarkable, vividly bringing ancient Egyptian history to life. A standout experience was the sunrise hot air balloon ride over Luxor and the Nile. We nervously climbed into the balloon basket in the dark and were soon lifted 3,500 feet into the air as the sun rose, offering a spectacular view of the landscape we had explored days earlier, and a stunning perspective of the Nile from above.
After a bustling week, we indulged in some luxury at the renowned Winter Palace Hotel on the River Nile. Famous figures such as Winston Churchill and Agatha Christie have stayed here, and it has been a filming location for movies like Death on the Nile and series such as Agatha Christie’s Poirot. Sipping cocktails and wandering through the beautiful hotel, we felt as though we had stepped back in time.
This journey remains one of my most exhausting yet memorable vacations, sparking a deep interest in Egypt’s history and a desire to explore more of this fascinating country in the future.
